6. Set Your Breathing Preferences for Somnox

This article explains how you can set your breathing preferences for Somnox with the mobile app.

Breathing preferences

Somnox relaxes your mind and body with a slow breathing pace. You can choose to create a breathing program or select breathing exercises. You can also turn on Somnox Sense - a feature that automatically detects your breathing pace.

Breathing program

Somnox has a standard breathing pace of 12 breaths per minute. This rate will slowly but steadily decrease to 6 breaths per minute. You can change this breathing pace with the Somnox app by creating a breathing program. You will need to connect Somnox with the Somnox app via Bluetooth to create a breathing program.


Create a breathing program

Setting up a program for Android

  1. Click on Breath on the home screen.

  2. If this is the first time that you are installing your breathing pace, you'll see a screen with Programs and Exercises at the top. Make sure Programs is selected and click on Add new program.

  3. a screen will appear asking for a name for your program. Enter a name for your program, like Sleep.

  4. You can now start setting up your breathing rate.

Setting up a program for iOS

  1. Click on Breath on the home screen.

  2. If this is the first time that you are installing your breathing pace, a screen will appear asking for new settings. Click on Create new program.

  3. Choose what you want to use Somnox for (Sleep, Focus, Rest, or Relax).

  4. Let's choose Sleep for now.

Set your own breathing rate as the start rate

First, you will be asked to set a start breathing rate. This is your own breathing rate. You can calculate your own breathing rate by counting the number of breaths you take in one minute. You can use a timer or stopwatch to do this.

When you know your own breathing rate, you can set this on Somnox with the Somnox app by following the steps below:

  1. On this screen, you can change your own start rate. This is the pace of your current breathing. You can set the rate between 2 and 20 breaths per minute.

  2. Choose 15 breaths per minute, for example.

  3. Click on Confirm your breathing rate.

  4. You have now set your own breathing pace as the start rate.

  5. A screen will now appear with additional settings for your program. You can change the end rate, ratio, and time of your program.

Set your end rate

Somnox will slowly lower your breathing pace to the end rate. An end rate of approximately 6 breaths per minute has a proven relaxing effect on your body. For this reason, it is the standard-setting of Somnox. If this is too slow or too fast, you can change the end rate.

  1. Click on Breath on the home screen.

  2. Click on the program Sleep that you already created.

  3. Click on End rate.

  4. You can now set an end pace as the ending rate. You can experiment a bit to find an end pace that feels comfortable for you. Breathing is very personal. When your starting pace is 15, you might want to choose an end pace of 10 breaths per minute.

  5. Click on Confirm your end rate.

Setting your ratio

When we talk about ratio, we mean the ratio between the length of the inhale and the length of the exhale. The standard ratio of Somnox is 1:2, which means that the exhale is twice as long as the inhale. It has been scientifically proven that an extended exhale has a relaxing effect on the body. However, you can also choose equal breathing. Follow these steps to change the ratio:

  1. Click on Breath on the home screen.

  2. Click on the program Sleep that you already created.

  3. Click on Ratio.

  4. You can choose between Equal breathing (1:1), Average breathing (1:2) or Longer exhale (1:3).

  5. Let's choose Longer exhale. The exhale will now take 3 times as long as the inhale.

  6. Click on Confirm ratio.

Somnox Sense

Somnox has a sensor that can detect your breathing rate when you hold Somnox against your belly or chest. Somnox will use the measured breathing tempo as input for guiding you to a slower breathing pace.

  1. To turn Somnox Sense on, just move the slider to the right.

  2. You have turned on Somnox Sense.

  3. If you want to turn off Somnox Sense, move the slider to the left.

Intensity of breathing

You can change the depth of respiration of Somnox by changing the breathing intensity. With a low intensity, the breathing of Somnox is shallow and you can hardly hear breathing sounds. With high intensity, the breathing of Somnox is very deep and you can clearly hear breathing sounds. This is because the motor produces more vibrations and sounds.

  1. Click on Breathing Intensity.

  2. You can choose between Low intensity, Average intensity, or High intensity. Are you sensitive to sounds? If so, select Low intensity. Do you want deeper breathing movements? Select High intensity. Do you prefer normal breathing? Select Average intensity.

  3. Select, for example, High intensity. Your Somnox will breathe deeply, and you will clearly feel the expansion. You will also hear some breathing sounds or vibrations due to the motor inside Somnox.

  4. Click on Confirm intensity.

Changing the duration of the program

In the mobile app, you can also choose the duration of the program. The standard duration is set at 60 minutes. This means Somnox will slow your breathing pace in 60 minutes from the start rate to the end rate. The duration of a program can range anywhere between 5 and 120 minutes.

  1. Click on Breath on the home screen.

  2. Click on the program Sleep that you already created.

  3. Click on Time.

  4. Choose a time between 5 and 120 minutes - 20 minutes for example.

  5. Click on Confirm time.

  6. When you have finished, click on Send to Somnox.

  7. Somnox 2 will now automatically turn off after 20 minutes.

You have now set up a Sleep program in which your breathing pace lowers from 15 to 10 breaths per minute in 20 minutes with a ratio between inhale and exhale of 1:3.

Creating different programs

You can also choose to create multiple programs.

  1. Click on Breath on the home screen.

  2. Click on Create new program.


Deleting a program

You can also delete a program.

  1. Click on Breath on the home screen.

  2. Click on the program you want to delete.

  3. Click on 'More' at the top

  4. Now select 'Delete program'.
