With the Somnox App, you can set your breathing preferences for Somnox 2. How do you know which breathing pace and ratio you should select? This article helps you to find your personal breathing settings.
You can find detailed instructions on how you can change breathing settings and make a programme via the button below.
Somnox 2 helps you to decrease your own breathing pace towards a more calm and peaceful breathing pace.
Your breathing pace
The standard setting for the start breathing pace is 12 breaths per minute. However, your own breathing pace can be different. If you are using Somnox 2 for the first time, try to breathe along with Somnox 2. If you are out of sync, we recommend you adjust the breathing pace with the Somnox App.
How can you calculate your own breathing pace? Follow the steps below:
Have a seat and relax
Set a timer on your phone of one minute
Breathe in, and out like you normally do. Count the number of breaths you take in one minute.
The number of breaths you took in one minute is equal to your breathing pace. Did you take 15 breaths in one minute? Your breathing pace is equal to 15 breaths per minute.
Pay attention! If you are stressed, or if you have done an activity, your breathing pace can be much higher. Thus, your own breathing pace is variable. Repeat the steps that are mentioned above if you are not comfortable anymore with the breathing pace of Somnox 2.
The breathing pace of Somnox 2 decreases towards a lower endpace which is more calm and peaceful. How do you choose your endpace? This is more difficult than calculating your own breathing pace. You will have to experiment a little bit to find a comfortable endpace. The standard endpace of Somnox 2 is 6 breaths per minute.
If your own calculated breathing pace is a bit high, between 12 and 20 breaths per minute, we recommend you to choose an endpace that is approximately 5 breaths per minute lower.
If your own calculated breathing pace is a bit low, between 6 and 12 breaths per minute, we recommend you to choose and endpace that is approximately 3 breaths per minute lower.
You can also deviate from our recommendations, but this can be a first step to find your endpace.
Your breathing ratio is the ratio between the duration of your inhale and the duration of your exhale. An example: you inhale for 4 counts and exhale for 6 counts. In this case, your exhale is 1,5 times the duration of your inhale. The ratio between your inhale and exhale therefore is 1 : 1,5.
There are three options for the breathing ratio:
Equal breathing (1 : 1)
Average breathing (1 : 2)
Longer exhale (1 : 3)
The standard breathing ratio is 1 : 2 which means that the duration of the exhale is two times the duration of the inhale. It is scientifically proven that a longer exhale has a relaxing effect on the body, but you can also choose equal breathing.
If your own breathing pace is quite high (16-20 breaths per minute), do not choose Equal breathing (1 : 1) - because this can cause you to hyperventilate. We recommend you choose Average breathing (1 : 2).
If your own breathing pace is quite low (2-6 breaths per minute), do not choose Longer exhale (1 : 3), because you will simply breathe too slowly. Also do not choose Equal breathing (1 : 1), because you will almost not feel the breathing anymore. We recommend you choose Average breathing (1 : 2).
If your own breathing pace is average (6-16 breaths per minute), we recommend you to experiment yourself with the breathing ratios.
