With the Somnox app, you can set your breathing preferences for Somnox 2. How do you know which breathing rate and ratio you should select? This article helps you find your personal breathing settings.

You can find detailed instructions on how you can change breathing settings and create a program via the button below.

Breathing rate

Somnox 2 helps you decrease your own breathing rate toward a calmer and more peaceful breathing rate.

Your breathing rate

The standard setting for the start breathing rate is 12 breaths per minute. However, your own breathing rate may be different. If you are using Somnox 2 for the first time, try to breathe along with Somnox 2. If you are out of sync, we recommend you adjust the breathing rate with the Somnox app.

How can you calculate your own breathing rate? Follow the steps below:

  1. Have a seat and relax.

  2. Set a timer on your phone for one minute.

  3. Breathe in and out like you normally do. Count the number of breaths you take in one minute.

  4. The number of breaths you took in one minute is equal to your breathing rate. Did you take 15 breaths in one minute? Your breathing rate is equal to 15 breaths per minute.

Attention! If you are stressed, or if you have performed an activity, your breathing rate may be much higher. Thus, your own breathing rate is variable. Repeat the steps that are mentioned above if you are no longer comfortable with the breathing rate of Somnox 2.

End rate

The breathing rate of Somnox 2 decreases toward a lower end rate that is calmer and more peaceful. How do you choose your end rate? This is more difficult than calculating your own breathing rate. You will have to experiment a little bit to find a comfortable end rate. The standard end rate of Somnox 2 is 6 breaths per minute.

  • If your own calculated breathing rate is a bit high, between 12 and 20 breaths per minute, we recommend you choose an end rate that is approximately 5 breaths per minute lower.

  • If your own calculated breathing rate is a bit low, between 6 and 12 breaths per minute, we recommend you choose an end rate that is approximately 3 breaths per minute lower.

You can also deviate from our recommendations, but this can be the first step to finding your end rate.

Breathing ratio

Your breathing ratio is the ratio between the duration of your inhale and the duration of your exhale. For example: you inhale for 4 counts and exhale for 6 counts. In this case, your exhale is 1.5 times the duration of your inhale. The ratio between your inhale and exhale therefore is 1:1.5.

There are three options for the breathing ratio:

  1. Equal breathing (1:1)

  2. Average breathing (1:2)

  3. Longer exhale (1:3)

The standard breathing ratio is 1:2, which means that the duration of the exhale is two times the duration of the inhale. It is scientifically proven that a longer exhale has a relaxing effect on the body, but you can also choose equal breathing.

Our tips:

  • If your own breathing rate is quite high (16-20 breaths per minute), do not choose Equal breathing (1 : 1) - because this can cause you to hyperventilate. We recommend you choose Average breathing (1 : 2).

  • If your own breathing rate is quite low (2-6 breaths per minute), do not choose Longer exhale (1 : 3), because you will simply breathe too slowly. Also do not choose Equal breathing (1 : 1), because you will barely feel the breathing anymore. We recommend you choose Average breathing (1 : 2).

  • If your own breathing rate is average (6-16 breaths per minute), we recommend that you experiment yourself with the breathing ratios.
